Every day in the U.S., 8 kids are shot by a misused or unlocked gun. Gun sales were at a 20-year high this past summer, and with coronavirus lockdowns keeping more kids at home, the number of deadly unintentional shootings by children is rising. To illustrate how critical proper gun storage is, as families are spending more time at home, States United To Prevent Gun Violence has tapped into the cultural phenomenon of unboxing videos by launching a PSA with a fictional eight-year-old influencer, Cayden.
The ad begins with a playful cartoon animation that resembles a cheerful unboxing theme, then transitions to a child named Cayden sitting in a bedroom, casually explaining that he wants to show something cool. As the unboxing progresses from the cardboard box, it's revealed that the item is a gun, with Cayden naively describing its features like any ordinary toy. The atmosphere shifts from innocent curiosity to a jarring reality as he showcases the gun's components. The ad then ends with impactful statistics showing the dangers of unlocked firearms in homes, aiming to advocate for gun safety and storage. The tagline "If it's unlocked, it can be unboxed" underlines the critical message, urging responsible gun ownership.
